"A gem" is the term often used to describe the golf course. The turn of the century and layout of the Joliet Country Club course set a standard of excellence for some of the best-designed courses in Chicago. The original course architect was Tom Bendelow in the early 1900s, a Scottish designer working with the Spaulding Company to expand golf play. Tom Bendelow designed courses in thirty (30) different states, not to mention a few in Canada and British Columbia. Here in Illinois, Tom Bendelow was involved with such other clubs as Medinah Country Club, Naperville Country Club, Olympia Fields Country Club, and Skokie Country Club to name a few. Thereafter, Dick Nugent in the late 1960s and early 1970s reconfigured the course with Dave Esler, reevaluating holes #13 and #14 to make room for the new Clubhouse that was opened in July of 2002.
The course is a great test of golf and it is kept in excellent condition for play by our professional superintendent and maintenance staff. The golf course is maintained according to the same standards adopted by the premier courses and top clubs in the Chicago District.
TheGolfCourses.net remarks that the Joliet Country Club course is a "very hilly course with tight fairways and small, fast greens. The signature hole is #16, a 345 yard, par 4, from an elevated tee, down a small fairway with a creek running through the center of the fairway."
Speed of play is important to the Club members. Our success in this area is considered one of the Club's greatest assets. Good tee times and general ease of accessibility to the course is another asset that acrues to members of the club
One member remarked, "What I love most is that I can play 18 holes at the Club with friends or associates on weekends.. meet family before noon for a great lunch at poolside... and enjoy an afternoon of family fun at the Club. It is great to finally be the hero, not explaining why I spent most of the weekend day just getting in my round of golf!"
The Club provides a large range and extensive practice area for member use to improve their game through practice and proper instrution from our PGA Club Professionals.
Members of the Club share a common love of golf and its time-honored traditions. You will feel closer to the way the game of golf is supposed to be played at Joliet Country Club. There is a special feel and service that only a country club can provide.
